Rugby clubs unite to raise money for Gwent ICU nurses

Monmouthshire rugby clubs Magor and Caldicot RFC have raised a remarkable £3,700 for Intensive Care Unit staff at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport with their shave and nominate challenge.

Magor chairman Neal Harris commenced proceedings by shaving his head and donating and challenged his club mates to do the same, a Just Giving page was set up with an initial target of £300 which was surpassed in just one night by Magor players coming together to show their support for the Gwent ICU nurses. Magor players then challenged local club Caldicot, who play in Division 2 East to participate.

Caldicot rose to the challenge with 24 people shaving their heads, and in excess of 100 more people donating to continue the good work of Magor. So far, the clubs have raised around £1,800 each with many more people donating via the Just Giving page shared on social media.

The Aneurin Bevan Health Board which covers hospitals in Gwent, Monmouthshire and Blaenau Gwent has become one of the frontlines in the battle with the coronavirus in the UK, adding to the pressure on an already struggling NHS. The money raised by Magor and Caldicot will be put towards theatre scrubs and clogs as Newport’s ICU staff are warned of an increase of ten times the usual number of intensive care patients.
