Why Wales youth international Lewis Clutton can be an instant hit for Penybont FC.

Penybont have bolstered their ranks with former Bristol Rovers academy midfielder Lewis Clutton.

Clutton, 19, has also featured for Wales throughout their age grade teams, playing alongside the likes of Neco Williams and Ben Cabango to name a few. He spent last season on loan at Salisbury in the Southern League Premier South and believes he can bring ‘energy’ and ‘versatility’ to Penybont who are due to start their second season in the Cymru Premier, the pinnacle of Welsh domestic football.

“I spoke with Rhys Griffiths on the phone a few times before going up to the stadium when it was safe to do so and it felt like a proper football club going in the right direction” he said, on why he chose Penybont.

“I have a couple of friends who have played in the Welsh Prem and they’ve all said how its helped them develop so it would have been stupid of me to not take up the opportunity”.

Had things turned out differently, Clutton may well have been in the Rovers squad for the new League One season. “Obviously I was gutted to leave Rovers, I’ve been there for 12 years, which is most of my life and I haven’t known anything different”.

But Clutton insisted he had no regrets “I’ve had many setbacks in my short career so far so I’d like to think I’m mentally strong enough to overcome anything that comes at me now, I’m just looking forward to the next chapter at Penybont”.

‘Bont’ who avoided relegation to the Cymru South by three points last season in their first term in the top flight will be looking to improve this time out and with the addition of exciting young talent such as Clutton, they will definitely be ones to watch this year.
