USW Men’s Football 2nds v Cardiff University Medics

USW Seconds claim entertaining pre-season victory over rivals Cardiff Medics. First half goals from Fredrick, King Junior and Marcus Holbakkon were enough for the home team to earn a 3-2 victory at the USW Sports Park.

The game started with both sides having early opportunities, the most notable falling to USW striker King Junior who dragged the ball wide after being played through one on one with the goalkeeper. USW did break the deadlock in the eighth minute through number 9 Fredrick who beat the keeper at his near post. It was evident from the opening exchanges that both sides wanted to play football with plenty of passing football being played. However, a loose pass in midfield led to USW’s second goal as Fredrick broke through the middle, his shot excellently saved by Medic’s ‘keeper George Kohler only to be fired in on the volley by King Junior.

It looked as if the boys in red were beginning to take hold of the game with King Junior particularly impressing in attack, but it was the Medics who grabbed the next goal through talismanic skipper Harry Brebner who finished off a flowing attacking move with a tap-in. Only to be cancelled out 7 minutes later by Marcus Hollbakkon who became USW’s third scorer of the afternoon with a penalty tucked past the keeper after King Junior was bundled to the ground in the box.

In the second half, the tables turned and the Medics dominated but could only find one goal in reply through winger Cai Evans whose cross come shot found the top corner but despite two late chances couldn’t find an equaliser with the game finishing 3-2 to USW.

A worth while exercise for both teams with both teams showing good attacking play but ultimately it was USW who come away with a well-earned win.
