The home side earn a first league win of the season at the sport park thanks to attacking star Megan Jones.
The home side came into the game off the back of a dramatic overtime victory against Cardiff Met 5ths in the Western Conference cup last Wednesday, however, still yet to win a game in the league. A frantic opening quarter at the USW Sports Park saw both sides attackers exchanging blow for blow but it was USW’s forward duo, Megan Jones and Abigail Meredith, who impressed in last weeks cup win that were the more ruthless. Jones and Meredith outscored their counterparts by 11 goals to 7 in the first period, 7 of which came to goal shooter Jones.
With Natasha Cowell coming in at goal attack for the second quarter, USW really took a hold of the game. Jones scored another 8 goals to take her tally to 15 and Cowell providing 3 scores to the 5 scored by the Meds front women Osa Eghesa and Elin Thomas combined. At the midway point USW held a 22-12 lead.
A more evenly balanced 3rd quarter saw Cardiff Meds outscore USW 12-10 to make the overall score 32-24. Jones and Meredith netted 5 goals each for USW whilst the Meds top scorer for the evening Josie Richards landed 7 and Elin Thomas 5 including a 3-goal burst to end the quarter.
Being behind by 9, a big last quarter effort was required but with frustration growing and more risky passes being thrown, USW pulled away to win the game 43-34. Some crucial interceptions from Wing Defence and Captain Kate Griffiths and the ever-green finishing of Jones were vital in securing a first league win of the season against a resilient but not as well drilled as USW who seriously impressed.
USW will take an enormous amount of confidence from this victory into next weekend clash with West Walians Swansea.
